I myself am a person that would rather do much anything after dark than during the day. I dislike sunlight and I welcome the world of darkness that envelopes ours every night.
Many people find the darkness frightening simply because they cannot see what is around them and therefore cannot feel secure. The thing about night is that it requires a certain leap of faith to stalk the midnight streets. You cannot know what is around the corner and if something does happen then you are quite on your own as most everyone is asleep in their beds.
My personal favorite time for a nighttime jaunt across the city is about two A.M. If you live in a large metropolitan area you won't see much difference excepting the number of tourists. I prefer the very edge of the city, just as many businesses as there are homes and hopefully as few street lights as possible. I can think of very few things more satisfying than stepping out of the shadows to the unwelcome surprise of someone who prefers the day and is forced out at night against their own comfort levels. another amazing thing about the night is it's lack of light to be seen by. The thrill of being invisible is comparable to very few and following a lone wanderer is an enjoyable activity in of itself because you can feel like the predator you were meant to be.
The real question to ask yourself is who is behind you? Yet another thrill of being outside behind the closed curtains of society. Being the prey is yet another interesting quirk of the night, knowing an armed mugger could pop around the next curtain is just another game to be played carefully.
The night is as old as the world and I wonder every day why we became so afraid of it.
