How can I be sure of my salvation?

by Margaret Jamal

Created on: January 03, 2009

There is so little that anyone can be sure of in life. Yet many of us would like to know how we can be sure that we have salvation. The answer to this must first begin with having an understanding of what salvation means. After this understanding, there needs to be the desire to be sure of the answer. If we want to know for sure of our salvation, there is a way to check for evidence that we have it. Because I wanted to be sure of my own salvation, I was open to learning about evidence to demonstrate this certainty.

SALVATION DEFINED:

Salvation may in fact have a different meaning to different people. But salvation is not the product of, nor does it respond to our own definitions. Salvation had a different meaning for me until I went to the source for an explanation. So many like me, settled for what we believed salvation to be, while still sensing that we didn't quite have it right. However, the Holy Bible is the source that introduces salvation and also defines it.

According to the Bible, salvation is God's solution to the problem of sin and death. While sin is disobedience to God, salvation is made accessible through obedience- which is righteousness. It is because of the obedience of Jesus, the Christ of God, that anyone can obtain salvation from sin and death. [Romans 5:12-19] This salvation is granted to all who believe that Jesus is the one who saves people from sin. They must also make a public declaration of this belief. [Romans 10:9-10]

While sin brings with it destruction, salvation delivers people from this same destruction to enjoy eternal life with God. This peril is not merely the physical death that we all experience, but also the spiritual destruction that separates us from having a loving relationship with God. Salvation is a state of existence that points to the afterlife, yet begins in our present life. It is in the present that we seek to know the answers to "am I saved yet?" and "am I still saved?"

THE DESIRE TO BE SURE OF SALVATION:

Just because someone asks the question does not mean that the same person really wants to know the answer. When answering the question about how to be sure if I am saved, it is possible that I may also learn that I am not saved. Fearing the truth could keep me from seeking to know the answer.

To uncover the answer, one must first be open to believe that Jesus is the provider of salvation for everyone in the world.
This may be a difficult hurdle for many to overcome for reasons almost as vast as we are unique. If you
