Ways to Get Rid of Holiday Blues
The same winter that brings us some of our favorite holidays also can throw us into a blue slump. Cold, dark, and stormy days, bills piling up, and bored children sometimes plunge us into the post holiday blues.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
This recognized medical disorder is a blah, depressed feeling brought on by the absence of sunlight. Short cloudy days, and frequent storms add to the effect. Cabin fever results from staying in too much and not seeing other people. Talk to your doctor. He may recommend special lights or a temporary tranquilizer. Going outside even on cloudy days gives the benefit of natural light and elevates your mood.
Post Holiday Let Down
You worked non-stop with your cooking, baking, shopping, wrapping presents, and going to parties and other special events. Now that it is over, you run out of steam because there is no exciting thing that has to be done right now.
Fun activities counteract the post holiday cleanup and redecorating. A trip to the movies, a date with your spouse, or a night out with friends cheers you up and makes you feel good.
Your Spiritual Side
Remember to care for your spiritual side. Pray, meditate, go to church or temple, or read your bible. Connecting with others of your faith improves your mood and helps you through the blues.
Count Your Blessings
Of course you have problems, everyone does. However, count your many blessings. Name them one by one, as the old hymn says. Family, good friends, a place to live, food in the cupboard, and so many more bring happiness to life. Thank those who provide for you and thank the Higher Power who made all the wonders of earth.
Help Others
Remember those less fortunate and resolve to help someone around the world, or in your own neighborhood. Volunteer somewhere. Helping others is exciting, exhilarating, and gives purpose and substance to your life.
Whether you decide to sponsor a Third World orphan, rock a baby abandoned in your local hospital, or volunteer at a thrift store, someone needs and appreciates your interests and talents.
Pamper Yourself
Visit the hairdresser for a new "do." Sink into a tub full of bubbles, indulge in a sweet no-no like chocolate or ice cream, or catch up with a friend at a fancy restaurant. You take care of everyone else, so take time every day to love yourself.
Wrapping Up
To sum up, looking forward to other good things in our lives helps get rid of the post holiday blues. Fun activities with other people and helping those in need boost your mood. Counting your blessings and taking care of your spiritual side add to your feeling of well being and lead to a productive and happy new year.
