It's the most common question for new members, and even those with much experience as writers do not always take advantage of the opportunities offered by a site like Helium, simply because they don't know the secrets of what makes an article earn money.

Layout and writing of articles.

While a member may be one of the best writers on the site, if they do not adhere to writing guidelines and learn how to present articles which are recognized as best in the rating boxes, they will not succeed.

The layout of an article matters. Having an opening paragraph which invites the reader into the article in a manner which is presented as a solid paragraph helps enormously to get your article rated higher in the ratings. Similarly a strong ending helps. If you admit to the fact that careless raters will not read the whole article, these two key paragraphs are the most important to the solidity of the article. Make sure that these are eye-catching.

Address the topic in the opening paragraph, and make sure that your article stays on topic and does not wander away from the reason the article title was produced. Writing for an Internet audience is different from traditional writing. Paragraphs should be short and snappy, so that information can easily be accessed.

The reason this makes a difference to income is that the top rated articles will always be the first to be read, and therefore make more money.

Things to avoid.

Avoid questioning the title. What this does is send your article off topic from the very first paragraph. Often articles which say that a title does not make sense will be rated down when compared with those which address the topic given.

The new guidelines on Helium ask for subheadings never to be in capital letters. There are members who disagree with this, though it is clearly stated in writing guidelines. Avoid promotional information in your articles, and make sure that your article links are complementary to your article and give additional information for those seeking answers to questions raised.

Promotional Periods.
