Where do we get our personal values?

The study of values is perhaps the most important of all studies since we are making value judgements every minute of the day yet as as as I can discover there is little or no study of what they are. I have contacted a number of tertiary education bodies
concerned with so called "Values" and asked how they define the subject of their being and not had a single coherent reply.

There is much written about the subject but I find that each writer defines values to suit their views rather than what could be considered as a universal definition. Sonali Chulki is to be congratulated on his clear statement as to his view of the subject but I believe
it cannot be considered as a comprehensive definition.

When we use the term "Value" we are usually refering to one thing as relative to another . In the material world the measure of a thing's value its cash value. In the world of philosophy the term value is also use to indicate preference of one thing over another so what is the currency of "Values"? I suggest that it is energy. In brief one's values are made manifold by the application of energy. If you wish to know what a person values do not ask them directly. Ask what they do.

If you find my definition difficult to accept. I suggest that you select what you consider
to be one of your most important values. Now honestly assess the energy you apply
to the application of that value and when and how you apply other values in preference to it. No energy, not a value.
There is much confusion between the two words "Ideals" and "Values". I suggest that
ideals are what we aim for and values are what we achieve. Feelings of conscience
measures the difference between the two.

Whilst we may with honesty list in order of importance what we believe are our values
we must recognise that the order can change and in some circumstances some must be abandoned if others are to be applied. The important thing is to be aware of what we really are valuing. If you want to know what you are valuing at any time keep asking "Why" am I doing this? Then asking the same of the answer. The answers may well surprise you if you are completely honest.
This is a brief introduction to a new view on a difficult subject. Values are a difficult subject to wrestle with and the struggle requires honesty and the capacity to learn more about oneself. On the other hand you may find that the process extremely clarifying, particularly in concerning relationships. Do you know what "Sorry I have not had time to ......" means? It means that ....... was not of sufficient value to be performed.
