Once the excitement of Christmas and New Year's is over, many people experience a bit of a letdown. For single people, this feeling can be even worse, as there are fewer social functions and family events to attend. The winter has set in, with January being a particularly bleak month. If you’re single and find this time of year challenging, below are a few suggestions on how to deal with the post-holiday blues.
* Volunteer
One of the primary reasons single people feel lonely can be due to a lack of connectedness with others. One great way to feel part of something and to help others is to get involved with volunteer organizations. Try out several things until you find something that is a good fit, and look for opportunities that involve groups of people. That way, you can socialize and network while doing something good for those in need.
* Get out of the house
When you feel lonely, you may want to curl up in bed and read a book. While reading is a great hobby, be careful not to dive into books as a way of avoiding getting out and about. If you live alone and are single, consider going to a movie or to a coffee shop. Perhaps you would enjoy walking through a park. Just putting yourself in situations in which you are around other people can ease a sense of aloneness.
* Call a friend
Just as chicken soup is good for the soul, so is talking to an old friend. If you are feeling down, do not make the mistake of withdrawing from others. Place a call to a friend, and enjoy a laugh or two.
* Find a new hobby
Hobbies can be very fulfilling. If you do not have a hobby, then you should pursue one. Perhaps you would enjoy a cooking class or taking up gardening. Pursuing interests can be informative and fun.
* Join a gym
If you do not belong to a gym, then join one. Exercise will make you feel better due to endorphins, and you may meet some new friends while at the gym. Even if you are not looking for friends, be friendly to people you encounter at the gym. You will feel better just smiling and saying hello to some people.
* Read a devotional
One great way to ease a lonely heart is to get in the habit of reading a daily devotional. You can find great strength and solace this way, and also recognize that you are not alone in certain struggles.
In conclusion, there are many things a single person can do to combat feelings of loneliness. Being single is not easy, but there are some ways to deal with the situation and to make connections. And, the more you get out there, the more you may find yourself spending less time alone.
