How to choose a grocery store

Food is a necessity in life, however where we buy it is a choice. There are many, many grocery stores in existence these days, everything from neighborhood or small town markets to local chain stores to national supercenters to wholesale retailers. So, how do you decide where to buy your groceries?

The first step is to assess your situation. Do you live in a metropolitan area where there are many grocery stores to choose from or do you live in a more rural area where there is only one or two nearby? Are you shopping for a family or just yourself? How much money do you have to spend on groceries every week or every month?

After you answer these questions, you are well on your way to making an informed decision of the best grocery store for you and your family. Your particular life situation is very important when selecting a grocery store for many reasons:

1) Location- Do you want to drive far to get groceries or would it be in your best interest to shop close to home? This is a question that is very important to consider. If you drive farther, you may find lower prices, however is the cost of gas worth it? It's also important to think of the additional time it takes to drive to a grocery store that is farther from your home than others.

2) Selection/Variety- What stores offer the products that you or your family is interested in buying on a regular basis? Do you desire to buy mainly basic items or specialty items?

3) Price- Which stores offer the lowest prices for the quantities you regularly buy? Who offers the best specials and deals routinely? Which stores can you shop at and stay within your weekly or monthly budget for food?

4) Store Employees- Which store has the friendliest employees? Which store has people available to answer your questions and help you out when you need assistance? How is the checkout process? Are checkout lines short or long? Does the store try and win you, as a customer, over? Does the store appreciate your business and show you this?

5) Overall Store Environment- What hours is the store open; are they hours that are convenient for you? How is the store organized; is it easy to navigate? Are items and aisles marked well? Are the carts the right size for your average shopping trip? Is the store clean? How is the parking? Do they offer drive up or carry out services to make your shopping trip easier?

While there are many, many things to consider when choosing a grocery store for purchasing food, the most important thing is that the store meets your specific needs and the needs of your family, and remember that the same store is not right for everyone. Take all of the above factors into consideration when choosing a store where you will primarily shop.
