How to be successful at interviews and win the job

by Renee Ruby

Created on: January 03, 2009

In today's economy, jobs are becoming scarcer. With hundreds of thousands of new job seekers, the all-important job interview becomes even more important. Having good interview skills will help you win the job for which you are applying. The statement that "image is everything" has never been truer.

The type of job you are applying for is not important. Whether vying for an executive position or hoping for one of a few available assembly line positions, you have got to really want the job. You must be committed mind, heart and soul to the challenge of getting the job. Initially, you want to get your mind into a competitive focus. After all, applying for a job, especially now, is a combination of skill, knowledge, luck and competitive spirit. Every job applicant is competing against the others for a position. And with the job market becoming flooded only the best of the best will fare well.

The job interview is the most important tool a company utilizes to hire employees. The normal procession of steps required to apply for a job all lead up to the interview. The application, resume and any questionnaires are all filters to allow the elimination of undesirables so that only the most qualified are chosen for interview. Scrutinization of such precursors will be intense as the number of applicants for any position rises. If you have made it thus far, it is time to get prepared for the interview.

The first thing to consider is your wardrobe. Even if you are applying for a labor job, you must take the extra effort to look like you want the job. If you show up in khakis, button up shirt and tennis shoes for a job, most human resources managers will smile politely, go over your application with you and then shake your hand before you exit their office, never to be seen again. Do not use the "I can't afford a suit excuse." Most Goodwill and other thrift stores have suits to buy. Many of them are donated by well-to-doers looking for a tax write off. Therefore, you may find exceptional value for your money. Here are some business attire buying guidelines.

*Do not buy a tuxedo or formal wear suit, you are not getting married and it is not as cool as you might think.

*Women should avoid low-cut or revealing necklines and short skirts. Pantsuits are acceptable.

*The suit should be still "in style" and not trendy, stick with the basics. You should make the suit not the other way around.

*Choose a neutral color such as black or grey.

*Be sure the suit fits properly, not
