The pursuit of a career in freelance writing is much like the pursuit of any other kind of business and selling the written word is the same as selling any other kind of product. A writer must be as knowledgeable about potential markets as they are about the rules of grammar and spelling that are so vital to the work. The books and magazines about the writing trade that can be found in most bookstores and libraries are one good way to learn more about where to market a story or article. Networking with other writers in an in-person or online writer's group can be a way to land jobs since word of mouth is a great way to find work. Plus, modern writers should also be comfortable enough to be able to easily navigate the internet since this is the best way to keep up-to-date on changing markets.
Most writers are familiar with the basic sources of writing market information available in published form. Writer's Digest puts out a variety of books and magazines, such as the annual Writer's Market, that can be indispensible resources about book and magazine publishers. Many of the annual publications now also come with a companion online account that provides writers with the up-to-the-minute about editorial staff changes and other information that can help make a sale. These books and magazines are also markets in themselves as they include articles by authors who are sharing their experiences and advice to the users of the publications.
Writer's groups often circulate information about open markets to their members during in-person meetings or through e-mail announcements. Some of the larger writer's groups may even bring in editors and publishers to talk to the members about their editorial needs. These groups are wonderful sources of support for a freelance writer since they not only help find open markets, but they also help writers work out the problems that may prevent them from making a sale.
The internet is probably one of the best ways for a freelance writer to make a living. The world wide web offers many thing to a writer: it serves as a source of information and inspiration, is a place where writers can easily network, and can also serve as a way for a writer to market their work. Freelance writers can set up their own web site or blog to market work to people who may be searching for something in particular. Plus, writers can also earn a little money on the side and make important connections by writing for sites such as Helium.
All the world is an open market to a freelance writer if they only know where to look.
