It seems as though "morals in life" have been replaced with "acceptance in society". With constant media attention focused on appearance and the fabrication of what the reality of life should be, it's no wonder our younger generations are spiraling out of control. That is why we as parents need to claim control over this situation. Parenting is a moral responsibility above anything else, doing everything within your power to instill good moral values in your child. If you haven't taken the time to talk to your daughter or son about the importance of responsible, safe, intercourse now is the time. Many parents may be hesitant to do this just because of the nature of the subject. We always explain the benefits of abstinence to our children. Approaching and dealing with it may be an uncomfortable and even embarrassing situation for you, but the long term advantage far out-weighs any limitations.
Becoming a mother at the young age of 18 and now parenting a 14 year old daughter, the oldest of my 4 children, pregnancy is an almost daily topic in our home. Even though I am pretty confident the words "Mom,I'm pregnant" won't be uttered to me anytime soon, I must admit my heart does skip a beat when our conversation begins with "I have to tell you something" which is then followed by some nonchalant teenage excitement from the school day. The important thing? We communicate. The primary focus of my relationship with her as a mother has always been the lesson "learn from my mistakes". I am in NO WAY saying my child was a mistake and she is completely aware of how much I love her; I am simply trying my best to teach her how important it is to find her own place in the world before she has time to even endure other valuable lessons in life. Making her aware of how, had I made different decisions during my life, the responsibility of parenting would have been a different lesson for me. Pregnancy alone is a lesson and will have an everlasting affect on any persons character regardless of the decision they make for their given situation due to the undisputable fact that it involves life itself.
