Kids are very aware of their parents, perhaps more than parents will ever realize. Kids watch their parents' actions, reactions, preferences, values. And in addition to watching them, they mirror them. Participation in sports can drastically change a child's life by promoting important things like health, wellness, and confidence. Because sports can have such a positive life-long impact on children, it's important that parents set a good example to their kids as spectators and participants.
It's primarily important that parents promote sports participation at a young age. Studies show that if a girl doesn't participate in sports by age 10, there's only a 10 percent chance she'll be participating at age 25. Encouragement doesn't have to come in the form of pressuring them to be the captain of the soccer team. Instead, give them a badminton set for their birthday instead of a doll, or go on family hikes and bike rides together.
If your child does sign up for a team, be their biggest fan. Attend games, practices, and volunteer for the team. In other words, be their biggest fan. Cheer them on every step of the way, from lost games to the championship trophy. Remember you're the adult, so behave appropriately no matter how blind the ref is or whether or not the other team looks like they're not following age guidelines. Sometimes, winning is just as important as losing.
Practice with your child as well. Go outside and toss the baseball or kick the soccer ball around. Don't worry if you're not an athlete, they'll enjoy teaching mom or dad how to handle a ball. It's great encouragement, quality time, and exercise for you as well!
Take your kids to local sports so they can see first hand the success and dedication of athletes. You don't have to spend a fortune on tickets and soft pretzels at the game, young kids will even be in awe of high school athletics. Then when they're on the team one day, they can look back and remember days of going to the game with their parents.
Encourage by doing! Dust off your cleats and glove and join an intramural team for adults. It'll give them the chance to be your coach and fan club, and console you when you lose and celebrate with your win. It's great exercise, a fun way to meet new people, and is perhaps the best way to really show your kids the determination, sportsmanship, focus, and fun that come with being an athlete.
