The post-holiday blues can sneak up on when you least expect it. All that work, planning and preparation for the holidays, and then in the blink of an eye, they are over.
Post-holiday blues can occur for a variety of reasons, some of which we don't understand ourselves. Perhaps you were able to see your family that you haven't seen in a long time, only to have to leave them and return home. Maybe you are single, and wishing you had someone to share the holidays with, especially if it seems everyone around you has someone special.
Or, on the other side of the coin, maybe your holiday was not a great a one. A recent loss in the family can cause a person to slip into a depression as you realize you are going through the holiday season without them for the first time.
If you believe your post-holiday blues to be the more serious depression, it is best to schedule a visit with your doctor. If you think you are suffering from the post-holiday blues, try these tips for bringing yourself out of it.
Tip #1: Redecorate, reorganize, or rearrange your home or apartment. The process of it will keep you busy, and the results will make you happy.
Tip #2: Volunteer your time. Find a charity or a cause that is near and dear to you and volunteer your time. Check with children's hospitals, homeless shelters or animal shelters and see if they are looking for volunteers. If you are unsure of where you can volunteer in your area, call your local United Way.
Tip #3: Bring home a new pet. Nothing can bring out the joy in people as a new, loving pet.
Tip #4: Host a dinner party at home for your friends. Get a cookbook and try out some new recipes. If your friends are willing, pull out some cards and/or a board game for some after dinner fun.
Tip #5: Host a slumber party at your home. If you don't have children of your own, offer to babysit your neices and nephews or friend's children overnight. Have popcorn and rent movies for a real slumber party.
Tip #6: Focus on work, and how can you succeed. Write a list of goals and work towards them. Set yourself up for that raise or promotion you have been after.
Tip #7: Go out with family and friends when they ask. If no one has asked yet, then call them up and ask!
Fighting the holiday blues can be difficult. You may be saddled with the urge to stay home, on the couch, and watch television everyday. Don't let yourself do this! Get out and get moving. Think of things you can do. You may find yourself having to force yourself to join the world, but once you do , you'll be glad you did.
