Poetry: Love does not die

We grew up in the city with the "Heart of Gold."

A secret of thirty years, gone untold.

I put my pen to paper today.

To remember you in a most special way.

We fell in love right from the very start.

You told me you loved me with all of your heart.

At the tender age of seventeen, you treated me like your queen.

Always so kind and never once mean.

We met when we were so very young,

at a dance and had such fun.

From that point on, inseparable.

Full of laughter, life, so lovable.

Your heart was like the gold you mine.

So precious, golden, natural and fine.

We had the world at our feet.

Nothing in life we couldn't defeat.

You would go to work twelve hours a day.

Come to our farm and help bring in the hay.

A hard working man in every way.

Someone who brightened and enlightened my life every day.

Sunrises and sunsets went by so fast.

Summer had ended at last.

Autumn brought the cool rain.

Along with it, a lot of pain.

I knew that deep in my heart.

We were not meant to be from the start.

One of us was night and the other day.

So very different in every way.

You wanted a family and to settle down.

But someone couldn't keep her feet on the ground.

You let me go my separate way.

To allow me to do things my own way.

It was my last year of high school, coming home on the bus.

The radio was blaring, there was some kind of fuss.

An announcement that a young miner had died.

He said your name, and we all cried.

You were only nineteen, your birthday just passed.

The shock and horror, forever will last.

Your young face is still etched in my mind.

Your smiling face unchanged for all time.

You saved another's life on that fateful day.

By pushing him out of harms way.

As the rocks above began to crash down.

A fallen hero died underground.

Whenever I'm feeling sad or blue.

I pull out that tattered picture of me and you.

Holding hands on that warm summer day.

Happy and in love in every way.

In my mind and in my heart.

I will hold you so close til I depart.

There is one last thing that remains unsaid.

Love does not die; it lives inside of me instead.

Michael, wherever you may be, you are forever alive in my heart.
