The best way to stick to your New Years resolutions

So today is the 1st of January 2009 and most of us will have woken a little later than usual, having drunk too much alcohol and overeaten the day before. The other thing that many people will have in common is that they will have made either a few, or a stack, of New Year resolutions, but will they keep any of them?

The end of a year finishes with Christmas and a flurry of over spending, and over indulgences in general. The final nail in the year's coffin is New Year's eve when people often get a little nostalgic and sentimental, and tend to take stock of their lives. With this in mind it seems a perfect time to start afresh and plan a New Year that will be different from the previous year. However, although making resolutions at this time of year is easy, it is not quite so easy to keep them. So here are a few tips, learnt from personal experience on the whole, which may help you stick to your New Year resolutions.

GET REAL.

You know yourself better than anyone else in this world. This means that deep down you know what resolutions you have a chance of keeping and what are important to you. Make sure that your New Year resolutions are realistic and within your capabilities. It is fine to dream, and occasionally reach for the sky, but if you seriously want your resolutions to succeed they need to be attainable. For example, do not resolve to be a millionaire before next Christmas as it is 99.9% certain that you are setting yourself up to fail. Unless of course you are developing a new business venture that is destined for success. Of course for most of this is not the case, but you see my point.

RELEVANT TO YOU.

Your resolutions are personal and so should be relevant to you. Perhaps you have always wanted to give up smoking and just need an incentive, such as New Year, to do the deed. On the other hand you may resolve to change job if you are underpaid or undervalued. This firm resolution may kick you into action. Really think about what has troubled you in the last year or been unsatisfactory and consider if it is possible to change anything. I am afraid that it is a sad fact of life that now and then there may be something in your life that cannot be changed. In this case 'What can't be cured must be endured', as they say. However do not be defeatist as most situations can be improved upon on.

BE POSITIVE.

It is very easy when you are taking a reality check to only see the negative aspects of your life and end up feeling depressed and a failure. However this is
