Horseback riding is a wonderful activity, but it is also one that can turn dangerous or even deadly before you know what is happening. The saying, "get right back in the saddle," is not without justification. Even the most talented riders can find their confidence shaken after a serious or unsuspected fall. The mental toll that riding accidents can take on us is huge, and can be difficult to overcome. There are a number of steps that you can take to assist yourself in recovering, and to insure that your future rides will be pleasant ones.
Back In The Saddle?
If it's possible, get right back into the saddle after a fall. If there is the possibility that you are hurt, then go straight to the hospital. But if you are not seriously injured, then getting back on the horse, even if you just sit on it for a few minutes, is the first step to breaking down a mental barrier that can quickly form after a fall or accident. Use your judgment when deciding whether it is best to get back on the horse, as all situations are different. If the accident has involved your horse falling, it might be best to get the horse checked out by a vet before getting on it again. If the horse is badly shaken and you think a spook or runaway is a strong possibility, then handwalking them for a while would be a better option than mounting up again.
It is important that you pay attention to what is going on in your head during this time. Don't allow yourself to replay the accident again and again. It is said and done; now is the time for you to be focusing on your next ride, not what you could have done differently in the situation. If possible, don't let too much time pass between your accident and your next ride. The longer we have to think about what has happened and what could happen the more difficult it is to mount up again. If you can't get back into the saddle, then just being around horses can be an important step. Bring carrots to your favorite horse, treat them to a grooming session, and just spend time with them.
Find a way to relax mentally. Some riders find yoga to be helpful for this. If you are struggling with debilitating fear, then it would be helpful to find a counselor to speak to. Everyone reacts to accidents differently. A counselor can help you get past fear and worry that you might not be able to cope with on your own.
