The PlayStation 3, although still with problems, is worthy of the PlayStation 2 throne. This system is definitely better than the already great PlayStation 2, and is well worth its dollar amount. In this article I will try to convince you why.
When the PlayStation 2 came out, it changed the gaming world. This system could handle 3D graphics with ease, its controller felt nice in your hands, and it could even play DVDs! This whole system launched for a fairly reasonable $300, the same as the original PlayStation, and with it came tons of AAA launch games, some that still have sequels coming out today, eight years later. This system was the best of the best, showing gamers worlds that never before existed and selling over 100 million consoles, five times the amount of the runner-up, the original Xbox. This system was, and continues to be, great.
In fall 2006 the PlayStation 3 was released. Although millions of fans still lined up to get their own console on launch day, many were disappointed with the PS3's release. The system launched at a pricey $600, twice that of its predecessors, and had few launch games that actually amazed gamers. The hardware in the system was state-of-the-art, but it was so complex that game developers had a hard time developing games for the system, and what games they did make weren't able to utilize the full power of the console. What's worse is that although consoles sold at a really high price, Sony was still losing over $200 on each console produced, a high loss to overcome in the gaming industry.
Two years later, it's looking much better than its launch. The price has been cut significantly (now priced at $399, it is still high but much more reasonable), great games have been released often, and 2009 is gearing up to be an amazing year, the most noteworthy of next year being the release of the widely hyped Killzone 2 in February. This system has a built-in blu-ray player, so if you have an HDTV and love to game then you can just get a PS3, instead of buying a different console and then buying a blu-ray player on top of that. Most importantly though, Sony has worked hard with game developers to help increase the ease of developing on their system, and now great games are being released left and right, and many of them are truly showing the power inside the black box.
The PS3 has had its share of problems, but in the end it is worthy of bearing the name " PlayStation" on it. With the PS3, game developers have opened up new worlds for people to interact in, with graphics so advanced some games can almost completely immerse you into the game world, making you feel more there than ever before. Hot games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, and the upcoming Killzone 2 have all brought (or will bring) good doses of wonder and innovation, something that games for the PS2 once did for us. Yes, the PlayStation 3 is now better than the PS2, and will only continue to get better throughout its lifetime.
