Best places for hiding money at home

by Dawn Hawkins

Created on: December 31, 2008

We often take for granted that our homes are the safest place to be. We also don't think a lot about leaving money laying all around the house. Sure, sometimes we think about getting some type of security system for the home. How many of us actually do it? For that matter, how many of us can afford to do it? When it comes to our money and other expensive items, we should take steps to secure it as best we can if we don't have it in our bank accounts. So where exactly are the best places in the home to hide your money?

Let's take a look at some of the best ways to hide your money and other valuables:

1. Children's Rooms - Thieves are looking for fast cash. They want to get in and get out. They will look in places that would be the most obvious at first. A child's room wouldn't be as obvious because children don't usually have money. That is the safest place in your home to hide money.

2. Ceiling Tiles - If you have movable ceiling tiles, find a spot that you feel would be an unlikely place for a burglar to start. It would take a great deal of time to go through each and every tile. Remember that time is of the essence for someone that has broken into your home.

3. Diversion Safes - These safes are not very expensive and they come in a variety of different cans. You can get a 7-Up can, an Ajax can, a dried soup safe, a wall socket safe and you can even get a Kibbles and Bits safe. These items are all life like. Cans of soda or beer sound and weigh the same as a real can of these items would. I would take a thief hours to figure out which one was the one with your stash in it.

4. DO NOT - Hide your money in something that has monetary value. You must think like a theif in order to know where they may look for money. They will steal anything that they can sell and get money out of. In other words, hiding your money in the CPU of your computer is not the brightest of ideas.

5. Picture Frames - If you are anything like me you have a ton of pictures in frames around your house. Take off the back of the frame and put your money inside behind the picture. Although a thief might eventually look there, it wouldn't be the first place that they look.

6. A Safe - If you want to go to the extra expense of buying a regular safe, by all means to so. However, be aware that if you don't have it professionally bolted down, a burgalur will walk away with it.

7. A Potted Plant - Make sure that you put the money or other items in a leak proof bag before trying this method. A thief may not
