The purpose of this topic may be to choose one show you feel was the best of the year, but it's difficult for me pick between three of what have become my favorite shows of the year.
The first show is True Blood on HBO. In this show Vampires not only exist but are fighting to have the same rights humans have. The title True Blood refers to a synthetic blood drink with the same name, this drink is a way for vampires to survive without having to drink the blood of the humans they live among.
The main plot revolves around a young woman, Sookie, with a special power. Not only does she fall in love with a vampire, but people around her are being killed and her brother is one of the main suspects. Add in touch of drama involving her best friends, some interesting characters as neighbors, and more vampires and you have a pretty good show.
This show might not be everyone's cup of tea but it had me wanting more and kept me guessing about who the killer was until the very last episode. I can hardly wait for the new season to start in the summer of 2009.
The second show that I'm loving this year is Fringe on the Fox network. Part crime show and part sci-fi show I got hooked right away. Although the science involved in the show seems a little far fetched you still come away wonder if these things really do exist and are happening somewhere in our world. Perhaps not as grand a scale but still are they happening?
Fringe is about a secret investigation being done by the government into crimes that are committed involving what's called "fringe science". As I said, some of the events seem a little far fetched but you still can't help but wonder what's real and what's not.
The third show is Eleventh hour on CBS. This is another science meets crime show. The events investigated on this show are more realistic and probably are happening right now. You have a scientist and his FBI handler going all over the country trying to unravel the mystery of one illness or another that usually has to do with some organization accidentally leaking a chemical or some bad guy trying to prove a point in some misguided way.
So there you have it, my picks for 2008's best television dramas. They are all good shows that keep me wanting more, and in their own way they're so different, so I couldn't write about just one. Hopefully you don't mind too much. I also hope that if you haven't seen these shows that I've made them seem interesting enough for you to check out.
