How to plan a baby's first birthday party

Birthdays are special occasions, and it's really exciting when your baby makes it to the one-year milestone! You may wonder how to plan for your child's first birthday party, or who to invite.

While you will understandably want to mark this event with a party, it's wise given this economy and the age of the baby to keep it relatively simple. It is surprising how many folks go all out for a baby's first birthday, but that is just not necessary.

Below are some tips for planning a fun but practical birthday party for baby's first birthday.

1. Decide where you will host the party.

Since your child is so young, it may be easiest to host the party at your house. Depending on the month of year, you may want to consider having it outdoors in your yard, or you may want to keep the party inside.

Either way, there are several fun things you can do at home. Another option may be to have the party at the home of the baby's grandparents. Or, perhaps a close friend will offer to host it.

2. Determine the invite list.

For the most part, a baby's first birthday is for your friends and family members, as the baby has yet to make friends of his or her own. That being said, make a list of people who you and your husband would like to invite.

Again, you can keep this relatively simple. Less can be more, and you can have just as much fun with an intimate gathering as with a larger group.

3. Allocate a budget.

Before getting into too many details, it is smart to figure out what budget you will have for the party. This budget will help you make many of your decisions. If you are working with a small budget, for example, you may choose to bake a cake instead of ordering one from a fancy bakery. Keep in mind that you do not have to spend a lot for your guests to feel welcome and enjoy themselves.

3. Next, plan your logistics.

Once you know where you plan to have the party and how many you will invite, you can plan more details around the logistics. First, you will need to determine the date and time. Early afternoon makes for a nice birthday party, if on the weekend.

Then you will want to decide if you are going to have a theme. Does your child love clowns? Or is your baby love pictures of the sun and moon? If so, you can find party decorations, and napkins and plates that match what your child loves.

You can easily find party decorations, and theme ideas, online or at a local party supply store. Again, you do not have to go overboard here. But, you want to get a few items so that the party will
