Memoirs: Courage

by E. A. Mourn

Created on: December 30, 2008

I know courage. A rapist introduced us at a skanky bar. At the time, I didn't know courage at all, well, not real courage. I got all my courage from a bottle, or actually a glass, that was where the rapist comes into the picture. He put some GHB, you know, date rape drug to most, in the glass I was drinking from. At the time, I knew nothing of date rape drugs, but why would I need to know anything about them. What I now know is that it is a brutal chemical that renders you a vegetable and wipes your memory just like pushing the erase button on a VCR.

I was out with my future husband at a bar. We were riding our motorcycle that day. God how we loved that thing. Yeah, drinking and driving a bike, that tells you that I had met stupidity long before courage. Or maybe it goes like this, I met courage in a bottle and courage in a bottle introduced me to stupidity...yeah, that seems about right. Anyway, this rapist, was lurking around the bar, seemed to be a regular. Later we discovered that he was a very skilled con artist as well as a thief. He somehow engaged my future husband in a conversation while he slipped me a mickey while I was in the bathroom. Not long after, when my head hit the bar and I went out like a light, the stranger that had my future intended enrapt for so long (part of their talent I guess), he claimed that I had done triple shots of some god awful grain alcohol, one right after another on a "get it for free if you can do it" kind of dare.

Now being a good con artist, he noticed the helmets and gear immediately when we entered the bar. He also noticed me, evidently. He knew that if he could seem the good buddy right away, that when he slipped me the mickey, I wouldn't be able to ride. So, he then becomes the Good Samaritan and offers to follow my guy on the bike back to my place. One thing he didn't know was that the future hubby and I lived together, even though it was originally my apartment. We were both in the midst of divorce and we didn't talk much about living together since his was an ugly one from the start, and even though he was separated, he didn't want trouble coming our way. My divorce was very low key with no one angry...unusual, but I was grateful.

Anyway, so my guy falls for this and we all go home, me in a stranger's car...not a stellar judgment for my guy, but we all make mistakes, albeit that was a huge one. They put me to bed, then they both go out, my guy insisting that he buy such a nice fellow dinner for his help. They come
