The Cons:
The editorial process can be brutal. If there is no improvement in grammar, spelling or formatting, and if the guidelines are consistently flouted, your account will be terminated. As has been proved time and again on the forums at CC, the Editor is fair, keen eyed and invariably right.
Your articles can languish for weeks or months with no sales. If you are offering full rights or unique rights they are tied up with CC and cannot be offered elsewhere. On the other hand, you can have a burst of sales that will make your account blow out in a most satisfactory manner. It all depends on what buyers are looking for.
You may have to ask for the Best Offer, rather than the price you want, if your articles languish too long. It is advisable to offer your articles for usage only in this case, rather than lose the rights for less than you feel is fair.
There is no cost to join, or to post articles. However, when an article sells, CC takes a 35 per cent commission, just like a literary agent. This has to be allowed for when you set your price.
As an overview, CC is a great site if you are serious about making money as a professional writer. Once you have honed your skills on Helium, you can approach CC and brave the editorial process. You will find a forum community that is helpful and friendly, and a content site that sticks up for the integrity of its business and its authors.
