Top skiing destinations in Canada

Without a doubt Canada has proven itself among the world's preeminent ski destinations. From Quebec to British Columbia, world-class resorts as well as world-class conditions offer skiers of all abilities kilometres of heavenly vertical upon which to enjoy the absolute best of mountain terrain.

The most popular of destinations beckons west, to the coast, with the incomparable Whistler Blackcomb Resort, the Official Alpine Venue for the Olympic Winter Games in 2010. Newly open this year, in a feat of engineering genius, is the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. As the name suggests, the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb are joined by a nearly 2 mile stretch of ride allowing but 11 minutes to stand in the way between enjoying one mountain or the other. Whistler Blackcomb boasts some of the most pristine conditions in the world not to mention a consistent quality and amount of snowfall. In addition to remarkable access to both mountains the resort offers a multitude of activities on and off the slopes, catering to all manner of ages and interests.

Travelling east through British Columbia, there are some new additions to the elite premier ski destination list. While they've long been admired and respected by locals, it is only recently that mountains such as Revelstoke Mountain Resort and it's neighbor, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort have been making a splash internationally. Having both added vertical in the past ten years or so, with incomparable powder and seemingly unlimited amount and variety of terrain, these up and coming resorts still offer the best in experience, from conditions to food to accommodations. The beauty of these lesser known mountains however is that they can be enjoyed at a fraction of the cost of resorts like Whistler or their counterparts just across the border in the Alberta Rockies.

Certainly, no review of Canadian ski destinations is complete without making more than a passing mention of those fully established and internationally renowned mountains in the Rockies. Lake Louise is still a top choice among ski enthusiasts worldwide. It ranks among the world's preeminent and is in no danger of losing it's esteem. With consistent snow conditions and the variety of runs and terrains, utilizing fully three mountain faces and catering to skiers of all abilities, it still rules the roost in terms of favourites. Sunshine Resort is popular for its consistent and challenging conditions but also it's wonderfully warm exposure and long season, stretching well into May, sometimes June, when neighboring hills have closed their doors weeks before. Norquay is notorious for it's challenging vertical, perfect for those of the more avid persuasion in need of a thrill!

While Canadian resorts are among the best in the world, so is that along the road, or slopes, less traveled. The Canadian Rockies has grown in popularity for it's back country experiences. There are any number of companies catering to get you up peaks and glaciers well off the beaten track, whether by foot, Snow-Cat or Helicopter. Without a doubt, no matter how you get there it's all world class, where the scenery is unmatched and you are guaranteed the time of your life.

Canada has long been known for it's variety and quality of ski experiences. You can count on every year bringing something new to that experience serving only to enhance and entice. Whether your a beginner or are looking to find the best. Powder. Ever. Canadian mountains are the place to be!
