Tips for maximizing your style on a budget

If you'd normally never set foot in a budget clothes shop, perhaps it's time to sneak in and take a peek. Students, models and fashionistas from all backgrounds like to save on some items so that they can splurge on others. Many budget fashion stores get great deals on luxury items like cashmere sweaters, leather gloves and silk scarves. Unless you shop in a budget store yourself it's impossible to tell where such luxury items came from.

I know one very fashion-conscious lady who pops into the Manchester Primark on her way back from the airport. When she's asked where she got her beautiful orange leather gloves from she says "Oh these? I bought them on holiday,"

It's hard not to go shopping crazy in budget priced clothes stores. But the savvy shopper doesn't dress head to toe in budget fashions. With a little thought (and restraint!) you can appear very well dressed without overspending.

Here's a guide to the ten best budget buys and some items to steer clear of.

Underwear

Frivolous, frilly, kinky and fun. Pretty undies are a luxury item that makes you feel great. Shop till you drop in the knicker department or stock up on basic boxers and kid's pants.

Remember that cheap underwear doesn't always wash as well, so hand-wash your smalls to keep them in shape.

Leather gloves

Whether long or short, sensible brown or bright pink, leather gloves are an affordable luxury that will never go out of style. A brightly coloured pair looks expensive and will add a touch of colour to a drab winter outfit.

Silly shoes

You know you're only going to wear them twice! If you want this season's sparkly, glittery, gold stilettos with bows on the toes, don't pay full whack for the designer pair. Wear em twice and throw them in the back of the wardrobe without the guilt factor.

Scarves

Cheap scarves to jazz up any outfit. From warm and woolly to real silk, add a touch of colour without breaking the bank

Pyjamas and wraps

Lovely, fleecy pyjamas to take you through winter. Made from man-made fibres, fluffy pyjamas will keep their colour and shape wash after wash.

Holiday shoes

You can't go wrong with the classic white, rubber soled pumps, or perhaps a leopard print gold pair is more up your street? Jazzy holiday shoes add a touch of fun and sparkly to summer outfits.

Beach bags

Straw or fabric, most budget stores stock cheap and cheerful bags that are just perfect for holding cameras and bottled water on the beach.

Cashmere

Many budget stores offer their own range of cashmere sweaters. Black is a good
