For many churchgoers, baptism is the ritual that symbolizes “the washing away of our sins”. However, in a more real light, baptism is the divine process by which we are separated from the sins of the world, much like in the story of Noah and the Ark. Noah’s faith and trust in God led him to become totally immersed in this process, in spite of the ridicule he suffered. Noah had heard and took God at His word, recognizing it as the truth.
Is it necessary to be immersed in truth? That's what Jesus said he was.
Every generation is called to seek the truth, and wise men follow the light in search of the answer. The truth about the way to abundant life has come down to us from ages past. As “an instrument of salvation unto the gentiles” it was wrapped with love and laid in a manger, in a stable place.
Jesus said, "I am the truth, the life, and the way." He also said he was the “light” and the “door”, among other things. We’re told that the early Christians were referred to simply as followers of The Way.
I read a book once that explored the meaning of the different names of God. It explained that the word "name" actually means nature or character, at least when speaking of God. It makes sense. Satan is the father of lies; God is the Father of Truth, making Truth the Son of God. (If I’m lyin’, I’m dyin’.) So I now choose truth as the way to live. But not so in the beginning.
My journey began before I even knew it. Not looking for truth at all, I was drawn in by the beautiful music, joined the choir, and in just a few months I had joined the church. Fairly shallow of me, huh? Thank God, it gets deeper.
I started going to bible studies, and it was there that I began to seriously wonder why this book had lasted so long. How could any intelligent person read this stuff and believe it? How could people all over the world find a common bond in this? Was it just ignorant superstition on a grand scale? Some who obviously had no doubts were not only intelligent people but seemed to have wisdom and maturity as well as a calm and assured inner peace. So I began reading in earnest, "believing" that there had to be more than meets the eye.
There was.
As I "pondered over the surface of the deep" the Word said, "Let there be light".
