NBC "Must see TV" in the 90's reigned supreme over the comedy sitcoms on television. However in 2007-2008, the CBS stations have really taken the title. One of my favorites, The Big Bang Theory. Where no one is the star of the show, but the group working together is superb.
Sheldon Cooper, PhD. Is a theoretical physicist played by Jim Parsons. Parsons previously had a recurring role on another CBS show, Judging Amy.
Leonard Leakey Hofstadter, PhD is a physicist played by Johnny Galecki, best known for his role as David, in the Rosanne Show.
Penny (I have done quite a bit of research, but for some reason Penny has no last name) is played by Kaley Cuoco. She played Bridgette in 8 simple rules.
Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar, round out the last two members of the Big Bang Team. Simon plays Howard Wolowitz, M.Eng. And Kunal plays Rajesh Koothrappali, Ph.D.
These five rounds out the group, with other people brought into their world by different circumstances. Whether they are potential girlfriends, boyfriends, or family.
Sheldon is a self absorbed, top brilliant theoretical physicist his field, who thinks he is smarter than everyone. He shares an apartment with Leonard.
Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Rajesh are all working in research at Caltech. Though they have highly evolved intelligence, they work on different project at Caltech, so they do not have to compete in the world where they each excel.
They were all happy being nerds, until Penny moved into the apartment across from the hall. This causes Leonard to think beyond physics, and falls in love at first sight, causing him to exclaim, "Our babies will be smart and beautiful", to which Sheldon responds "They will also be invisible"
This set the stage for the fun that was to begin. Howard and Rajesh are always at Sheldon and Leonard's apartment. Either playing the weekly games on the computer or sharing takeout dinners.
Howard still lives with his mother, and is stuck in the 70's both in dress, and decorations in his room. Though you never see his mother, you hear her whenever the phone rings or someone is at the door.
Rajesh is from India, and is not able to talk to women. Every time Penny is near, he is unable to speak. Once he participated in an experimental drug. He was able to take to Penny and any other women, but the side effects were difficult to deal with.
One thing I liked about this show is that there are a lot of guests played by the sitcom Rosanne. One is Sara Gilbert, who starred opposite of Galecki as Darlene Conner, and Laurie Metcalf who played Aunt Jackie. Gilbert plays Leslie Winkle, PhD. Leonard and Leslie have a sexual encounter, who later decides that they could not have a relationship. Metcalf plays Sheldon's mother Mary, who is called to Sheldon and Leonard's apartment, by Penny who called to complain about Sheldon.
If you only watch one sitcom this year, turn into the Big Bang Theory on Monday nights on CBS. They do not play full episodes of this sitcom on CBS.com or hulu. So be sure to catch it on CBS television.
