The complications of growing up! Where does one begin to reflect upont the trials and tribulations of the long journey to adulthood? The teen years can be some of the most challenging parenting years, yet very rewarding. Between the friends, poor choices, and struggles to fit in; the teen years can become overwhelming for the whole family. But, once the teen in your life crosses that stage and receives his/her diploma, you will know that all of those challenges have been worthwhile.
Teens are known to make poor choices. Just because a teen comes from a loving, supportive home, it does not mean they will not test the waters. Unfortunately, many teens learn the hard way. For example, a teen who chooses to smoke will battle illness more often than those teens that opt not to smoke. From a parent's perspective, this seems like a no brainer to me. During the elementary years our kids are told of the dangers of cigarettes; and our kids do tend to accept the fact that smoking is bad for them. But, toss them into a party with a bunch of crazy smoking teens, and most any teen will take that first addictive puff. Bam- they are hooked!
As parents we have to contend with the idea that we are "stupid" and do not know anything. Teens do come around in time, but sometimes it takes the intervention of a police officer to guide them to reality. From the occasional fender bender to the skipping of a U.S. History class, teens sometimes need a huge wake up call. Hopefully, your teen will have a supportive parent to catch them once they fall into that large net! I truly believe that through our teenage children we can become stronger parents. The challenges and set backs along the way will make us more knowledgeable! Face it, a couple years ago I had no idea what a "smoke" was.
Sometimes I feel as though I have been a fairly naive parent, and in all reality I have been. Through the interventions of some very helpful law enforcement officers and knowledgeable teachers, I have expanded my vocabulary in ways I never imagined. The road to adulthood is never easy. By working with our teens and reaching out to the support that is available, adulthood will welcome our teens with open arms. Growing up should not have to be complicated, but due to the ever expanding world we live in, it seems inevitable. With so many questions and only so many answers; it is only through life experiences that young adults can find the answers that they need!
