Poetry: Repentance

A Hunter/Forester Repents

Great God omnipotent,
Beneficent Creator of the eternal universe,
In whose all-encompassing sight
The mightiest star and minutest atom
Are of like import,
Who knoweth neither infinite nor infinitesimal:
Look upon me, miserable microbe,
Pitiful parasite,
Plunderer of thy priceless bounty.

Unworthy am I e'en yet to speak thy precious Name;
Yet hear, oh Timeless One,
As poised I stand before the yawning abyss,
My falt'ring plea:
Forgive, oh God, unworthy me
And stretch thy shelt'ring Hand
'gainst man's corroding touch
O'er every beast
And (yea, oh God!)
O'er every plant
And tree.
