It all begins with a few simple white throw pillows. It doesn't matter if the pillows are homemade or purchased. Versatility is our friend. It's not the pillows; it's the embellishments that take them to the next level. Why white? It will work for all holidays and occasions. In between the holidays they can be tossed in the wash and stored for the next special occasion.
There will be some well placed buttons on the pillows. The button is how the designs for each special occasion are attached to the pillow.
It's the perfect neighbor gift because no matter which holiday it begins for at least a year they will get the next holiday decoration.
So let's get to work.A birthday cake or two is a good place to start. If drawing isn't a strong point patterns and clip art seem to be every where. Get felt squares of every color and get creative.
Make sure to measure so the birthday cake can simply be buttoned on to the pillow on the appropriate day. It may be fun to have a different cake for every family member with a name and a date.
Valentines Day may have a selection of hearts or perhaps some roses. Customize the project to the people whom will use these great decorative pillows. A Goth friend may appreciate a coffin. Anything goes. Just be sure the button holes are properly placed on the design.
Saint Patrick's Day has a plethora of choices. How about a rainbow with a pot of gold? Perhaps a stein of a frothy beverage? Maybe a wee little man who brings lots of luck is just the ticket. A simple shamrock worked well for Grandma.
Easter can be brightly colored eggs, religious symbols, or perhaps just spring flowers.
Wedding anniversaries can have rings, a small bouquet, or anything that would remind him the anniversary is in the near future.
Memorial Day can have flower arrangements, names of loved ones and flags to represent those who fought for our freedoms.
Flag Day is a holiday in June. We put the American Flag and then two of the flags where our ancestors came from. It is a great little conversation piece.
The 4th of July is all about fireworks, picnics, and freedom in our home. Some of the decals are a fire cracker, a soldier's helmet, and a hot dog. Whatever works for the recipient of the pillow.
Hunting season in our family is a special occasion and we have camouflage hats and boots, a bow and rifle. Admittedly, it's not for everyone, but it's not in everyone's home.
The idea is clear. It is an easy gift that you can keep adding to and the family looks forward to the pillows hitting the couch. It means something important is coming.
