Asking the question, "Which is the better sport for boaters: Sailing or motorboating?" is the first step down the slippery dock into the yachting world. Only a novice, known as a land-lubber to indoctrinated boaters, would ask such a question. That is something both motor and sail boaters would agree on, it is also likely the only thing they would agree on. In the boating community, that question sparks the equivalent of the "tastes great" / "less filling" beer arguments
The debate between the "rag hangers" and the "stink pots" likely began before the ripples had calmed from the launching of the first mechanically powered personal pleasure craft. It would not be a stretch to say the first motorboaters were met with the same dubiousness that skiers initially displayed for snowboarding. While the debate will likely rage on for centuries, the undeniable fact is that today, most boats, regardless of configuration, have motors.
Navigability of the vessel and skill of the operator are factors to consider in the sail verses motor boat debate. While nearly anyone with a drivers license and a credit card can rent a boat, operation of the vessel is another matter entirely. It is very difficult, even in the best conditions, to navigate a boat entirely under sail in the close quarters of a marina. Bumping the dock is one thing, but it is generally frowned upon to bump other boats. Motorboats make navigation inside a marina much easier. It is less likely you will lose control, unfortunately if you do, a motorboat is likely to do more damage in a more spectacular way.
Most boaters simply enjoy being on the water, how they get there is somewhat secondary. When it comes to making the commitment to your own boat, or as they are called in the boating community, a "hole in the water into which you throw money," there are several factors to consider. Unless you're fishing or racing, a motorboat, or powerboat as they're commonly called, is more of an efficient waterway transportation vehicle than a sport.
To truly understand what would be a better boat for you, power or sail, look at the activities you currently enjoy. Are you a spectator or a participant? Do you watch sports on television and attend live sporting events? Are you on a team, in a league, or otherwise an active participate in a sport? What do you drive?
In broad stroke generalities, if you are a spectator, you are a powerboater. If you are a participant, you are a sailboater.
If a skateboard is your thing, try out a sailboard
