Why people own pets

by Bridie Cavanaugh

Created on: December 27, 2008

I am constantly covered in pet hair. The lint brush people have made a fortune off of me! The edges of my couches are well chewed and the rugs on the stairs have been used once too often as scratching pads. My floors are lined with dog beds and the window sills are stuffed with cat pillows. I've headed out in a blizzard because we are out of cat food and I've had to cancel dates because one of the dogs isn't feeling well. My friends shake their heads and ask "why do you own pets"?

There are so many answers to that question. I can't even imagine a life without pets. I never stop to ask myself "why"? They are friends and they are family. I feel badly for those who question a life full of pets.

Pets view every day as a new opportunity to do new and exciting things. A walk around the block is an opportunity for adventure. There is always a neighbor to be greeted, a squirrel to be chased and a favorite corner to be marked. They take their time and investigate every new leaf with enthusiasm and curiosity. On the days I find it hard to get out of bed I am often greeted by the warm sound of a cat purring. This is a sound of pure delight. They are alive, and warm, and surrounded by love. They are confident that all is well with the world. They stretch and leap. They are ready to start the day.

A pet will love you on good days and bad. They offer unconditional love. They always see the best in you. Maybe you've gained a few pounds, lost your job or cheated on a test. They look at you and somehow still see you at your best. They enjoy your company and aren't afraid to let you know how much they need you. They enable you to see the best in yourself.

Pets listen. You can explain your deepest fears and dreams. They do not judge. They know just when to put a paw on your arm or when to lick away the tears. They watch patiently when you rehearse a speech for work or vent about your partner. They may not fully understand but they are willing to take the time for you.

My clothes may have tell tale bits of fur hanging from the hem. My spare room may house a litter box. My car may no longer have usable seat-belts. But, my life is richer thanks to my pets. They have taught me to let the little problems slide and to enjoy life's little pleasures. They have brought out the best in me. They are friends and they are family. I am lucky to have them in my life.
