In order to learn throughout life self discovery is paramount. As healthy adults we constantly engage in self discovery, by reflecting on situations and there outcomes. This reflection is often used to learn from the positive or negative thoughts and actions that we chose and/or implemented in various situations. After many instances of positive or negative reinforcement created by general life problems and successes, depending on the outcome of a particular situation adults for the most part have learned the skill of self discovery. Furthermore, adults have discovered, whether at a younger or older age, the benefit of learning through self discovery. Unfortunately, many people were not taught this necessary skills which enhance their ability to learn, causing lack of interest and comprehension.
By educating our youth on there individual learning styles and how to identify and and implement basic yet necessary techniques to suit their individual needs, we will be opening doors and creating opportunities for our youth to succeed with an understanding of themselves, further promoting self awareness and confidence. By teaching a child how to recognize and discover themselves we can offer the individual a way to engage in and appreciate learning. For example, if a child understands that they are more apt to be interested in, in turn, comprehend subject matter presented visually, such as a power point presentation or a film they can seek this means of education and will be more lkely to understand, appreciate and recall the information. By doing so the child will learn the material and gain confidence from their knowledge, causing a positive learning experience. For example, a student who discovers that they recall and retain information by listening to the information, using may benefit to participate in a lecture rather than look at photos. Also, they may have discovered that their attention span is limited, allowing them the opportunity to best comprehend the subject matter in brief sessions rather than all at one sitting. Where as if they have not discovered personal characteristics they may attempt to learn the subject matter in an alternative fashion, leading to frustration and/or failure to learn and apply the newly aquired information.
Remembering that self discovery goes beyond learning styles it can be further stated that an awareness of oneself also creates a level of comfortability in social situations, providing that the child has a positive view of themselves which can be promoted or damage through environment.
Overall, self discovery is necessary for people of all ages, however it is learned by either being taught the necessary skills for self exploration or trial and error. Self awarenes skills include, reflection, analyziation and appreciation of yourself. If the skills were taught or modeled at a young age, children would learn who they are and how they operate for maximum growth, educationally, socially and emotionally , therefore offering them the freedom to enjoy learning comfortably and effectively. Let us not forget that education includes the whole person, not just cognitive abilities.
