The Amazon Kindle, which is obviously made by Amazon is an amazing device so far. Well only if you like reading, which seems like a hobby which is diminishing to me. Well I bought a Kindle about a month ago, so I have been able to test it out in the wild for some time now.
What is an Ebook Reader?
The kindle is an e-book reader. If you do not keep up with the latest and greatest in tech and don't know what an ebook book reader is, its a small device which you can put downloaded copies of books on....If that doesn't help then think of an MP3 player but instead of having songs to listen to you have books to read on it. E-books have been out for a decent amount of time, they are not really a new thing, but the Amazon Kindle may be the thing to make ebooks the next big thing.
What Makes the Kindle Different from other ebook readers?
The Kindle makes huge improvements to the e-reader market because it make buying and obtaining ebooks extreamly fast and easy. Unlike everyother ebook reader out on the market, with the kindle you do not need to go out searching all over the internet for ebooks. What Amazon does with the kindle, is brings the ebooks to you on the reader. You can acces the Amazon Kindle ebook store right from your kindle! With that you can search for any book on the amazon store, and buy and download with one click. And just to mention full books download within 30 seconds.
Now thats great an all, but do I need Wifi to Download books?
Nope! Thats the best part. As long as you have cell phone service and live in the United States you can browse, buy and download books. Amazon has a deal with Sprint and uses there cell service to beam you books, and for you to browse the store wirelessly. And before you ask, no you do not need to buy a cell phone plan with sprint, Amazon takes care of all the sending of data charges.
More about the Kindle
So we already talked about how Amazon makes finding and downloading ebooks super easy. Not to mention ebooks are cheaper then real books! The average New York Times best sellers go for $9.99 and are also great reads.
The Kindle uses a special screen called e-ink and this e-ink replicates almost exactly what a real book would look like. Its kind of scary how well it works. It makes reading very easy on the eyes. Readign on the kindle for hours will now hurt your eyes like staring at your laptop will. The one downside to e-ink is its not backlit. This is done, because reading somethign backlit would actually strain your eyes, but you would think you shoudl be able to read an electronic book in the dark, without havign to by a book light...
Talkign storage, the Kindle does nto have a huge built in memory, I believe its just over 100 megabytes, but it will still store over 200 books! Heck I dont know but thats a lot of hours of reading. But dont worry if your a crazy reader and want to read more. You can store the books you buy on amazon and re-download them to your kidnle for free. And you can also use an sd card, to add gigs of memory to your device.
Final Thoughts
The e-book reader for me has been great. I can buy books without goign to the book store or waiting for amazon to ship them to me. Even though the kindle is of great convenience and allows me to carry almost unlimited books with me in a small package, it is still a luxary item. I say this just because it is exspensive, at $350. Also buying books is so fast and easy you find your self spening money pretty quickly. But if you are a big time traveler, who can afford the Kindle, I would highly recomend it. Its great to have!
