Holiday health hazards often go unnoticed. Everyone is having fun, enjoying the festivities, friends, and family, with little or no focus on safety and health. Then there is the day after Christmas. What a let down this day can be. Stress of cleaning and having to pay the new bills is looming around the corner. Depression because the family has all departed and the fun has ended, can make one susceptible to many things that can invade the body and lead to sickness. Being tired will just add to the weakness of the body at this time.
Food is usually a number one hazard because often it is left out too long and goes bad, but in a rush it is placed in the refrigerator without thinking. Later that night, or the next day it is eaten and can lead to food poisoning or some other painful sickness. Of course eating too much sweets or junk is unhealthy, but during the holidays there are always a lot of cookies, candy, and cake left over. Illness and discomfort is a part of the holidays, but it can be avoided with proper planning and care.
Small objects are a hazard to toddlers and infants. After the presents are opened, and the paper and trash are scattered all over the floor throughout the house, a quick cleaning seems to make the house look presentable and clean again. The problem is that small toy parts or packaging pieces are often left behind. This is a huge danger because the little ones can pick them up and swallow them or choke on them. There must be a conscious effort to make sure everything is picked up and thrown away so the infants and toddlers cannot come upon them and become a victim of a terrible accident. The same is true with small batteries and magnets. However, these two can be far more dangerous if swallowed. Special care to account for all of these items is a must.
Driving and holidays are not always the greatest companions. After the visiting is over, and the parting hugs and good-byes are completed, the drive home can be very much a hazard. You usually have a great desire to get home as soon as possible because you are tired. Both hurrying and being tired are hazards that can be avoided if planned for ahead of time. Having more than one driver will certainly help when one driver gets tired and sleepy. It only takes a few seconds to fall asleep at the wheel, and the results can be horrible. Being in a hurry leads to getting tickets, but can also lead to automobile accidents. You should stop periodically to rest and get some water, and stretch, or change
