Americans have a sense of having fought for our country time and time again to achieve what we have. Some feel threatened when others come into what we feel is "our house" and abuse our healthcare system, take jobs, fly under the radar against our tax code or abuse our system in any way. Upon visiting some places that were was fought for in fierce battles, one would have to ask if we really won. All you'd have to do is take note of the majority of inhabitants in places such as Hawaii (Pearl Harbor), and Texas (The Alamo) to find that Americans are in the minority. It's been proven that the best way to defeat America is to not confront it head on but rather lay down your guns and sneak in the side door later.
Aside from the feeling of having fought and won a great country for ourselves in vane, some also still have that old feeling of entitlement by which we want everything for ourselves. However in times as we have in 2008 a few million uninsured illegal's make more difference and become more of an overall equation to our economy.
The truth is that illegal immigration becomes a drain on so many aspects of our economy. The one's flying under the radar have nothing to lose and will tend to steal or forge identities, have more of a tendency toward crime and overload the health system. But illegal immigration and those that come to America through all the legal channels are two different things. Unfortunately when we hear the word itself we tend to automatically think "illegal", or I should say, I do anyway, being
