Gift ideas for a writer

The greatest gift that you can give a writer is inspiration. Writers all always thinking, always searching for their next great story. By allowing a writer to explore their creativity, you are granting them the greatest wish.

A vacation is a wonderful gift for a writer. By taking them away to a new destination, you are allowing them to experience something inspiring. The rub is that you must allow them to write while on vacation. A vacation is a way to offer your writer a never-ending stream of ideas.

Another great gift to give a writer is patience. While on vacation, it's a given that your writer is going to write. Patience and understanding is another great gift.

My favorite gift is a journal. It's inexpensive and spending time to choose the right one shows that you know your writer's tastes. There are so many different journals; hard-cover, soft-cover, blank pages and lined pages, leather-bound or made of wood. The prefect journal is the way to impress your writer, and encourage them to write more.

For the writer who is inspired by the outdoors, set aside a part of the patio for a writing area. Christmas morning you can cover their eyes and walk them outside to see their new writing space. If it's within your budget, get them a new writing desk complete with journal and pen ready for work.

A writer needs that perfect writing space. Whether it's in the backyard, the house, or down the street at the park, providing that writing space is essential to keep your writer happy. Gifts in this area can include a new office set, a zen-like area in the backyard, a beach chair for those days when inspiration is found at the ocean, or an umbrella for rainy days at the park. Be creative. With a little card explaining the purpose of the gift, most ideas will lead straight to a writer's heart.

A laptop is always a great gift for any writer, but most would appreciate a simple pen. I know that I have an affinity for not only journals, but writing utensils. It may sound silly, but a pen, or pencil, is deeply connected to a writer's soul.

This brings me to my next idea; encouragement. By giving a journal, or even a fancy new pen, you are giving encouragement and approval. In some writer's minds, this is the greatest gift of all. Perhaps you get them a new desk, laptop, or even an entirely new office set, it is all encouragement to keep writing. Since a new writer is always a little nervous about how people are going to react to their career choice, by giving them your approval your giving them a greater gift than anything purchased.
