Sloppy Joes is a quick and easy meal to serve while on a tight budget. This simple recipe is excellent and quick.
Ingredients:
~1 and 1/2 pounds of hamburg
~Salsa or Picante.
~10.75 OZ can of tomato soup
~8 oz shredded cheese.
~Loaf of French or Italian bread
Brown the hamburger in a medium deep frying pan. Once the hamburg is a solid brown color, no more pink drain any excess grease. Add in the can of tomato soup and place over low to medium heat. Add in 1/2 cup of salsa to start. The salsa will give it some spice and tang. If you prefer spicier foods, add in a hotter salsa. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes to give the salsa and tomato soup time to bind with the hamburg. Once the base is complete spread the shredded cheese over the top of the mixture, turn heat to low and cover. While waiting for the cheese to melt, Cut your loaf of French or Italian bread at an angle into approximately 1 to 1 and 1/2 inch thickness. Toast the pieces of bread for better taste.
Once the cheese is melted in your mixture it is ready to serve. Place a piece of bread on the plate, place mixture on top, serve and enjoy.
There are many sides that can go with this dish to make it a wonderful meal. French fries and steamed vegetables are excellent additions to this dish.
This meal is also very easy to make into a low fat dinner. Substitute the hamburg for a low fat turkey. The tomato soup can be purchased in low sodium and cheese is available in low fat.
