Reflections: All I want for Christmas

by Alpha Bedoh Kamara

Created on: December 23, 2008

Some times the breeze blows heavy on those who feels downcast, but it is not often; though, those that are hungry and lonely feels the roughness of the breeze as it whizzes around in its frizzy mood. I am sure the winter is now biting harder in countries that have such weather, like it is, during the harmattan month in Africa, when poor and vulnerable people suffers the harshness of its dry windy canes.

People in Africa have suffered through this wrath, as hunger, diseases, famine and wars, among many others subjects them daily to the rigorous task of survival, to live or die. And this melancholy, is becoming more troubling as the Credit Crunch continue to hit nations that have stood/continue to stand by Africa, and third world nations- giving support and kindness.

The Credit Crunch', or shall I say, the 20th century recession, is impacting menacingly in many countries. The United Stated, Britain, China, France, Russia, and all others continue to feel the pressure as work places reduce their work force- sending signals to the people that things are not the same as they used to be; we (companies) must survive, or we risk collapse.

On Thursday December, 25, we will be observing the birth of CHRIST, or can I say the DAY for the celebration of the Birth of Christ? This day is observe/celebrated worldwide in pageantry. In Africa, children from the poorest homes also share the blessing of the month, for no one can deny them the right to sing the birth of the LORD; and they will sing their hearts to him, sharing happiness amongst them, and though poor and threatened by circumstances, shows appreciation to the Day, by hogging and dancing.

Our brothers, sisters, friends and loved ones in the Diaspora are witnessing in 2008, a Christmas that is unusual to others they used to know. The CHRISTMAS PRESENTs are reducing or have reduced this month, compared to the once merry Christmas they shared with love ones. The shops are reporting a reduction in their sales and parents are becoming more economical in their spending spree; and Father-Christmas' is also affected by the Credit Crunch- and his bag is reducing/has reduced. How many children will receive presents this month?

Like the howling harmattan in Africa; the wind blows dangerously around the world, but let us take heart in the purpose of the LORD. He came into the world to serve, to love and forgive. He came humbly in the hands of peasants, eat among the poor, but endowed with spiritual riches.

To you; brothers, sisters, friends and loved ones, whose lives are affected by the changes in this financial slide; look in to the LORD and think about his purpose.

Think about his birth and reflect on his sacrifices to save mankind- and then decide whether to continue to cry or share happiness with others, poor, rich, old, young, black or white in this joyous moment. What ever little you have in your possession, and which you willingly wanted to give, give with happiness, and with love.

Happy Christ-Mass- To you!

And Glorious New Year!
