Gaining weight during pregnancy is an inevitable, but not permanent, downside to having that cute little bundle of joy. Sure there are plenty of women out there who can fit back into their size six jeans in a matter of weeks, but the majority of us can't do that. For women like myself, who gained a whooping 70 pounds with each baby, it takes a little bit longer. It takes work, time, motivation, and energy, all of which we are in short supply. Just realize that the weight won't come off overnight, but it can be done.
One of the most important things I learned is that breastfeeding has multiple benefits for both the mother and the child. Breastfeeding not only provides the child with important nutrients and antibodies, it is also cost efficient and helps nurture the mother child bond. For an extra added bonus, it burns calories! How many calories burned during breastfeeding depends on the child and their age, but it averages to about 500 calories per day. If 3500 calories burned equals a pound, than breastfeeding can help you lose approximately one pound per week.
Depending on your delivery, exercise might not be an option right away so it is very important that you eat properly. It will be hard at first to plan and create proper meals, so keep it simple. Lots of lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables are key to a healthy diet. If you don't feel like getting out and about with your latest addition, don't worry many grocery stores have on-line ordering and delivery which will also save you time. Eating properly is not only good for your health and losing weight, but it will also provide you with added energy.
Walking is the best way to get started with a workout once you've had baby. Whether it's outside on a warm day, or inside the mall on a rainy day, any movement will help. Not only does this give you a chance to burn a few calories, it also gives your baby a chance to see the world. Once your body is ready and your doctor has okayed you to workout, try running instead of walking and incorporate weights into your workout routine.
Another great way to lose weight is to incorporate baby into a workout routine. I would hold my baby while doing squats or lunges, or stick them on my legs(like riding a pony) and do leg lifts. I would also stick them in the baby Bjorn and do housework which is basically like working while holding a 20 pound weight, depending on the size of your baby. There are also many great baby and me workout videos and classes out there that are great for mom and fun for baby!
Several months after having my first son, I was at a plateau and the most amazing thing happened for my weight loss...my baby became mobile. Chasing after babies should be considered an aerobic activity, and the month my child started crawling I lost ten pounds, and by the time he started walking I weighed five pounds less than I ever had in my adult life.
Losing baby weight is tough and can take awhile, but it is totally worth the effort. Not only will it benefit your health and self-esteem, but doing something for yourself will make you a better parent. It's easy to become wrapped up in every little coo and cry, but don't forget to take care of yourself. It will only make you a better parent.
