Perception is everything in the eyes of a child. They learn, they know and they understand what they are shown. The key to a child's happiness is the family happiness. Happiness is something that comes from within and much like self worth it can be formed, taught and influenced by others. Children are very intuitive and will follow parents and family down any path. Promoting a positive outlook and a general sense of happiness seems like a worthy path to tread.
~Celebrate the little things
Wonder little things happen in lives everyday. Breakfast went well and nothing was burned. Mention that little fact and point out the joy. A good thing just happened and more good things are on their way. Communicate all things that are going in a positive direction. To do this parents and families will actively be looking for good things as well.
~Build relationships
Teach children how to develop and nourish healthy relationships. Caring and treating people with respect helps everyone have a more positive and happy outlook on life. They people and friends outside of immediate family they can turn to in time of need.
~Set realistic short and long term goals with children
Accomplishing things is a good way to spread happiness. It promotes self worth. Progressing in a positive direction keeps everyone headed down that path of happiness.
~Happiness can't always be measured by a smile
Some people never smile even when they are happy. Allow them to celebrate happiness in their own way. Eeyore, you know, Tigger's
friend, is really quite a happy little donkey. No matter what happens he just keeps going. If he loses his tail, he looks for it. He thanks others for just noticing him. A smile is a good thing to have, but don't force it on anyone.
~Be kind to the world we live in
Stay close to nature. Treat the earth with respect and protect it's treasures. This can bring happiness to children for generations to come.
~Limit exposure to negative things
If there is always bad news on the TV, turn it off. Don't keep children in the dark about bad situations, but control how the news is delivered. For example, while they may understand there is war and people are dieing, they don't need to view the details everyday in full color. Be selective about exposure children have.
~Teach responsibility
We are the keepers of the world, our feelings, our actions and our reactions. Each person is a part of a lager picture, including children. Help them reach their full positive potential.
"Happy trails to you, until we meet again."
