Yes, absolutely society needs poets.

Without poets society has no scribe to illustrate the emotion of the era. Throughout history bards have been the one's telling future generations what their time was like. Be it through song or word it is the experience of the poet that drives history into the books.

Nowadays, society is concerned with the accrual of wealth and power and property. A flagrant disregard for the arts and humanities, I believe, is what has brought on the current state of affairs, despairs, and woes. As this generation crumbles beneath the weight of want and loss, something will break. These people will need an outlet. They will have to share what has happened or seek solace in knowing that they are not alone. The comfort will come, in my humble opinion, when they begin to search the Internet or the local bookstore. Within both those outlets they will undoubtedly find poetry. Within that poetry they will find what they seek.

As a published "free verse" poet myself, I find that the topics of my work are often what is happening around me. I form the stanzas to explain, rather metaphorically, what is currently important. Now, that topic (currently important) may have to do with my life, civilization in general, corporations, my relationships, or my family. It is through the publication of my poetry that the persons near to and far from me can glean an understanding of a life that is similar to, parallel with, or totally different from theirs. Either way it is an expression that is still read and understood and appreciated in these trying times.

It is my belief, although perhaps biased, that without poets, bards, or scribes, there would be no history for the sociaety of man.
