For as long as humans have had the ability to sit and wonder, we have always wondered what has come before us. Humans also like to wonder what will come after them, and for the time being, how everything got to be where it currently is. In the 100,000 years or so that humans have had the evolutionary capacity to wonder, we have stumbled upon only a vague understanding of what has come before us.
Did we evolve from monkeys? Or did God make us? If God made us, why did he make us? Why did He decide that the world needed humans to watch over everything? Couldn't He just watch over the world Himself? Considering how much trouble we have caused to the world, it probably would be easier to just either not make us, or remove us completely.
That my friends, is why humanity is so obsessed with the apocalypse. Our intense belief that a creator in heaven made us, and entrusted us with his best world, is a lot of pressure to live under. Our imperfections are blatantly apparent, and because of that, we feel that we cannot possibly live up to the expectations of such a holy, and perfect maker of the world. Since we have been taught as a species that we will almost certainly face some sort of terrible end times, we certainly want to make sure that the suffering we endure is limited by any means necessary.
Since we want to limit our suffering, we want to know exactly what is going to happen, to make sure that we are ready. Because of this, we go to church and listen to the preachers, because they have an in with God, and will be able to tell us what to look for. We read the Bible because God tells us what to watch for. They will tell us the signs, so that we can be ready for the end of the world.
We know that in the end of times, there will be great wars and famines. There will be a collapse of society, with one single leader and he will impose harsh rule. So whenever we see a global panic, or whenever we see one man gaining too much power, we tend to think that the worst is coming. This man, or this nation is the one that was told about in the bible, and he must be stopped by any means necessary.
In a way, it makes a person feel smart, or to feel part of something to be able to either point out a potential end to the human race, or to be a part of something that may stop a certain uprising that may lead to our destruction. That is why we always see people running around saying the end is near. If the world ended in the year 2000, a bunch of people would probably be running around
