When I was just a little girl -
I think it was in grade three,
Our teacher had us stand in line.
For the monthly spelling bee.

She'd choose lots of words from Webster's,
Then we each would have a turn,
To spell the words that she pronounced
Like "canopy" or "sunburn."

If we spelled them wrong, we sat down,
If we spelled them right, we stood,
The last one standing was winner,
Which meant they could spell real good!

Because some words were difficult,
I'd close my eyes really tight,
And spell the word so carefully,
In hopes it would come out right.

One time I won a spelling bee,
Up against a boy named Dale,
Who studied the dictionary,
And wow, could he ever spell!

Those spelling bees were a blessing,
And prepared the way for me,
I still enjoy playing with words,
In writing and poetry!
