I have often heard the discussion on the impact of America's two party system on government. One question raised during that discussion was: is America a democracy or a republic? I believe we can all answer both, a democracy and a republic because they both mean the same thing, government of, by and for the people who believe in a common cause, freedom, justice and equality for all. Remember the Preamble to the U. S. Constitution mentions... "with liberty and justice for all".
America's two-party system does not work well for its Republic because in the different named parties, corruption, and greed have become the order of the day. While a Republican or Democrat mean the same thing, the corruption and greed has caused them to be practiced in different ways. Could it be about who wants to control the power over the people rather than let the people be self-governed? In 1913 with the creation of certain organizations that use the alphabet such as FBI and others, the Republic of the U.S. America started to erode gradually. These alphabetically labeled organizations and their practices are believed to have caused the "great depression" in the 1920 and the reason the U.S. went bankrupt in the 30's and started to operate on a Code rather than on Law. Now we hear more about UCC (Uniform Commercial Code) than we do about the U.S. Constitution (www.commonlawvenue.com.
Until and unless America rids itself of the two-party system and become one government of by and for the people, her power in the world will continue to diminish. The question "Is America's two party system working well for our republic"? will continue to require a negative response. America's foundation was laid for a one party system that would represent all the people all of the time. Whenever there are two parties who interpret themselves with manufactured differences, such as moderate, radical, liberal, left or right, black or white, the society will continue to struggle for balance. A balance that cannot be achieved under a two-party system such as the one the currently exists.
I observed the recent presidential campaign and watched how the negativity launched by the Republican candidates caused a divide among American people. Behavior such as that deviates from the principles that the Founding Fathers laid down. Though those principles erroneously excluded an entire group of people, calling them three-fifths of a human being, we have now matured to the understanding that "all men are (in fact) created equal". Though many Americans have not matured enough to know that this is a fact, many have come around to the point that we now have a Black man elected to the position of President of the United States of America. He may not be a descendant of slaves, but he is made to represent what America is all about, the diversity and equality of its people.
The action of electing such a man President was the direct result of people who crossed over from the Republican party to the Democratic side, because the Democratic party for this election represented the One Party ideal of all inclusiveness for a diverse population of people. It would be so good to realize that A Democrat or Republic are just Americans and the term of one means the same thing as the meaning of the other.
It is time for Americans to grow up. As such, we must abandon old ideals of divisiveness and become representative of "One Nation under God", thus creating one party of Righteousness. Oh what a wonderful day that would be. May America become a Nation that God can and will Bless because of her Righteousness! Then when we say "God Bless American", we will not have to wonder will He?, because of America's not not good past.
