An excerpt from: In Search of Another Summer.

Background: Since meeting in 1976, Ellie and Tony have tossed and turned in the attempt to keep their love alive. Friends, family and fate have come between them, but through it all, they never stopped wanting each other. In 1978, during a time when they were apart, Tony married a woman he didnt love and Ellie searched the Disco's and clubs unsucessfully to find the man that would take Tony's place in her heart.

This night, they meet by accident in the pub where they first met. Tonight is the first time they have seen each other since Tony married. Tony's eyes meet hers across the room and draw her to him, as Linda Ronstadt's "Hurt So Bad" plays from the Juke box. Ellie invites Tony to her apartment for one more chance to be with him.

Characters: Ellie Morgan, 22 with auburn hair and large, expressive hazel eyes.

Tony Donofrio, 26. Athletic, dark and handsome- he is the love of Ellie's life.

Scene: 1980. An apartment bedroom. Lights are dim and candles glow from a bedside table. A young man and woman lay in bed, coupled together after making love. Al Stewarts "The Year of the Cat" softly plays from the stereo in the corner. Tony's voice breaks their silence as he wipes a tear from Ellie's cheek.

Tony: "I owe you an explanation"

Ellie: " No" replys as she touches her finger to his lips. "Dont say anything."

Tony: " I never meant to end up married. It just happened"

Did he really say 'that'...

Tony: "She was my neighbor and she had a great little boy, Trey, who had a birth defect. I loved him, not her, but somehow she and I ended up getting envolved. Before I knew it, she was telling her family that we were engaged and when I confronted her about it, she told me that we had to get married because she was pregnant. Me, a father? I would have a child of my own and a child I had grown to love, I felt that it was worth the try. I thought I would grow to love her too, but I didnt. Of course, she wasnt pregnant, but I was already in too deep and so I went through with it. I dont love her, Ellie, but I do love Trey and so....." He trailed off.

Ellie looks up at him, not knowing what to say. She knows he is a man of principle and that he wouldnt abandon someone like a child. She believs his story. As she touches his face, he leans in for a kiss, then whispers..

Tony: "I wish you had gotten pregnant"

Ellie: "What"?

Tony: "I always wished that you had gotten pregnant, I never would have left you".

Ellie: "I couldnt have done that to you
