First of all, making a commitment to write music everyday is the easiest part of the entire process. It starts getting hard when it comes to the follow through to the commitment. This article is intended to help writers make the follow through part of this commitment easier and eventually second nature.
Once you have made the decision to commit to writing music everyday, whether you are an aspiring songwriter, looking to break into the music industry, or are just a hobbyist, there are a few things that you need to do in order to realize and act on this commitment, the first thing that you absolutely need to do is
1) Evaluate your day to day life - Being that most people have regular jobs or work schedules, among other daily activities that they do, it is extremely important to take a couple of minutes to sit down and figure out when you are going to have time for writing music, you will want to dedicate at least an hour or two every day. You will also need to figure out when, or at what times of day, you are most inspired to write music. Then, figure out if you can fit a dedicated hour, or two, into your schedule at the time(s) that you are most inspired to write music. The next step would be to
2) Setup a schedule for your writing, and try to stick to it as much as possible - Do whatever it takes burn the spot for your composing into your current schedule. Setting different alarms helps a lot, so if you have the capability in your cell phone to set an alarm with a message, that is the best option, but also setup other reminders throughout your day, whether it be notes to yourself or any other means, get creative. Next, you will need to
3) Dedicate a workspace to writing This is important, you will want choose somewhere that you can get into a zone of writing. If you are able to set aside a room for this at your home, you are going to definitely want find a way to amplify your inspiration by possibly decorating this area with pictures of the artist that you are influenced by for encouragement, and also by having everything you need to have in order to write (pens, notepad, mp3 or CD player w/ ear buds to listen instrumentals, etc.). Now you will need to accomplish the hardest part of all
4) Actually sit down, focus, and write This is the hardest part of the commitment because it is extremely easy to become distracted during this time, especially if you have a family, but you need to focus on the tasks at hand, as much as physically possible. Complete focus will always help you to compose your greatest works. You will also want to set goals for yourself, for example, 1 verse per day, or 1 song per week, etc. Never feel pressured to rush through the writing process, take your time to give your best.
Once you get accustomed to writing after the first couple of weeks, it will become second nature, and you will even notice that your composing skills are getting better with the more you write. As it is said, "Practice makes perfect!" As a side note, you are going to want to invest in a notepad to jot down notes throughout the day, and a voice recorder, or you can possibly use your cell phone, in order to capture your thoughts in those moments when you can't write down your thoughts in your notepad. There it is and good luck in your musical endeavors from one aspiring artist to another.
