Power tools are motor-powered tools that are used in various applications like cutting, drilling, shaping and polishing. There is a wide range of power tools ranging from the commonly used hand drills and electric handsaws to drill presses and lathes that are more for commercial uses. Power tools increase speed and efficiency in modifying shapes and dimensions of the various materials like wood, plastics and metals. They are made to bring convenience to us in modifying materials, but improper usage can severely sabotage safety.
To avoid or reduce injuries in using the power tools, take the following safety precautions:
• Personal Safety
Wear protective clothing, safety gloves, and eye wear before commencing work using the power tools. If protective clothing is not available (especially if you are doing some home D.I.Y), wear clothes that fit well, not leaving too much excess of cloth. Tie up your long hair and make sure it is not touching your shoulder; hair may get caught in rotating power tools and cause very serious injuries. When working on metals and plastics, wear a safety mask to avoid inhaling the metal or polymer dusts. Also, if you feel unwell before or while using these tools, stop working and see a doctor if necessary. It is difficult to concentrate on your work and to watch out for your own and others' safety when you do not feel well.
• Method Of Usage
Use the tools in the correct manner as indicated in the equipment manual: saw in outward directions when using electric handsaws. Check for exposed wires and functionality before usage, replace tools if they are not in good condition. Ensure supports of the work piece are stable and standing on flat ground. Make sure the user of the power tool is using the tool in a stable and comfortable position to avoid falls.
• Draw Out Clearance Zone
Mark the floor area with a bright-colored tape that encompasses the work piece and the power tool involved. This clearance zone should provide at least 2 feet clearance from the work area. This is to reduce the probability of flying chips injuring persons who are working nearby.
• Safe Working Environment
The work area should be free from obstructions and should be kept dry when power tools are employed for use. Short circuit may occur in wet working environments, exposing the users to more dangers. Open windows of the room to increase the airflow, because high concentrations of metals and plastics dusts are health threatening risks.
• Toll Maintenance
Tool maintenance is an important safety precaution that is usually neglected, it includes the cleaning and checking of the tool after and before usage. Before and after using the power tools, check for any chipped edges in the cutting tool, because chipped cutting tools could break during operation, threatening the safety of the users and persons working nearby. After usage, clean and remove dusts and chips on the tool, oil the metal parts to prevent rusts.
• Storage
Make sure these tools are stored safely, on stable racks not reachable by children. Lock up the tool box if necessary.
• Proximate Assistance Available
Keep a first aid box nearby for immediate action when accident occurs. Most importantly, never use these tools alone; this ensures there is always someone around to help you if an untoward event occurs.
