For many, yard work is a chore. For others, it is a chance to reconnect to nature. However, whether you look forward to raking leaves and mowing grass or dread it like tax day, yard work can be a dangerous endeavor, especially if you do not take it seriously. The fresh air and warm sunlight is beneficial for everyone, but if you do not remember to stay safe while you work, you will lose far more than an afternoon.
There are many potential dangers inherent in nature, and one of the easiest ways to stay safe is to not take nature for granted. For example, you should always dress for the weather. Most homeowners know that you should not wear the same clothes clearing snow from your driveway that you wear painting the house in the summer. But there are many degrees of climate in-between these extremes, and you can easily stay safe by checking the weather forecast before you venture outside. Nature also poses many dangers in the form of animals and insects. Always be on the lookout for wild animals, and if you are allergic to insects, you can stay safe by ensuring that any necessarily medications are within reach at all times.
While nature can be dangerous, it is not the main source of risk when working in your yard. Weather and wild animals can pose problems, but you should first and foremost be concerned with the correct use of any tools and equipment. In order to stay safe, you must read any and all instructions and safety guides that come with your tools. The improper use of equipment is the number one cause of injury both in the yard and in the house; but more often than not, equipment used outside is far more powerful than the indoor variety, so the risks of serious injury or death are even higher outside.
You can easily stay safe by educating yourself about the numerous risks and dangers of working outside in the yard. However, you can also stay safe by listening to your body. Your body will tell you when it is tired and needs a break; it will also tell you when an injury has already occurred. Yard work is strenuous, and if you are too preoccupied with your work or the world around you, you may fail to notice your own muscles and bones. Maintaining proper posture is a simple way to stay safe in the yard. Remember to crouch, never bend, when picking up heavy objects, and make sure you switch arms frequently when using tools and equipment.
Most importantly, take your time. Yard work is not a race; in fact, if you take your time, you may realize you enjoy the work. Rushing the job to get back inside for a football game may seem like a good idea at the time, but rushing is no way to stay safe in the yard. With slow, comfortable movements and frequent breaks, you can ensure that you do not stress your body. You can also ensure that you use tools and equipment correctly; when you rush, you may cut corners, and you cannot stay safe when you do not follow the safety guidelines. Yard work may seem like a chore, but it does not have to be. With a sense of safety comes a sense of peace, and you may be surprised how much you come to enjoy the work you perform.
