We've all been there, the jam-packed closet, where there never seems to be any space for everything. Your closet doors are bursting at the seams and you've got nowhere to store that extra pair of shoes. Don't sweat it! A little spring cleaning will help you discover the extra closet space you never knew you had.
Begin by purging out your closet space. When you think you've emptied it all out, you'll want to reach back into the far dark corners and make sure there's nothing hidden from view. Lay clothes and other accessories on your bed or in an area out of your way.
Now, you'll want to get some good old fashioned soup and water. Use a rag to wipe down walls, shelves, and even the doors to eliminate the dust bunnies and lint taking up residence. It wouldn't be "spring cleaning" if you didn't clean the floor.
Next, you need to sort the pile of purged items you tossed out of your closet space. There is one of two ways you can do this: grab a few boxes, bins, or bags and label them: KEEP, DONATE, and TOSS. You can also take a sheet of paper and labeled areas throughout the room in which to create piles if the first option doesn't work for you. While sorting through your pile, you may find it useful to adapt a rule, such as for every one thing you keep, two are donated.
Don't be shy about donating something you haven't worn in a long time, just because it was expensive. It isn't doing you, or your closet, any benefit collecting dust.
Look inside your empty closet space, your spring cleaning is almost done. You just have to put everything from your "keep" pile back inside the closet, but this time in an organized manner. Inspect your closet space for possible additions of shelving, shoe or tie racks, or hooks. These additions allow you to group together the same type of items, and even sort them by color. Don't forget to label shelves and storage boxes for easy reminders in order to put things back.
If you're looking for places to stash stuff to get it out of the way, stop, most likely it doesn't belong in your closet anyway. Just toss it in your donate pile, chances are it's been hidden for a very long time, and if you didn't need it then, you don't need it now.
Give yourself a pat on the back, your almost finished!
You have two piles left in your room, DONATE and TOSS. You're not done until these piles have been cleared out of the room, and even out of the house. Box up your donate pile, if you haven't already, and stick it in the trunk of your car. Take out the tossed items and bag them up with your other household trash.
Now, grab a cold drink, put up her feet, and relax. You've just cleaned your closet.
A good spring cleaning not only cleans your closet space; it organizes your space, reveals extra storage options, and makes your items more accessible. Not to mention it saves you time and energy the next time you're trying to find a place for something new.
