Safety tips: Staying safe in your home during hurricane season

As hurricane season approaches yet again, predictions offer no hope of rest for the weary. While evacuation is the surest way to steer clear of a hurricane's deadly force, it is not always the most favorable approach to surviving these torments of nature. Especially in high probability areas, evacuating two or three times in a hurricane season is emotionally and economically taxing. Not all hurricanes are powerful enough to demand evacuation. A few safety tips and some good preparation can keep you and your family safe during this hurricane season, all within the comforts of home sweet home:

1. The most immediate danger in the presence of a hurricane is its high winds. Board the windows of your home before the storm if at all possible, or at the very least tape them with an "X" pattern on each pane of glass. If the windows be bombarded by flying debris, this will prevent any of the glass from flying through your home. Even with this preparation stay away from rooms with windows during the storm.

2. Expect to lose power. Stock up on batteries, flashlights, and weather radios. Furthermore, it is still not safe to use any electronic devices that operate on wall current. As a last resort, the surest way to avoid danger from electricity is to turn off power at the main breaker to your home. Even phones can be dangerous. Only use in the event of an emergency.

3. Do not attempt to go outside for any reason! In a hurricane, winds can approach 200 mph, which means that objects can travel at 200 mph! Death or serious injury can occur at any time without warning.

4. Prepare an emergency kit before the storm. This should include at the very least your flashlight and radio, electrical or duct tape, a first aid box, any medicines you may need, and bottled water. Non-perishable foods and a can opener are a must as well.

5. Read the current hurricane season information! Know your storm and its potentials and take note of any specific warnings from officials.

The safety tips outlined above are essential to protect from the immediate dangers of a hurricane. More extensive measures to prepare for a long-term disaster (like Hurricane Katrina) can ensure personal well-being.

1. Turn the refrigerator to the coldest setting and leave it closed. This will prolong the life of any food contained within. 2. Keep as much clean water as possible. 3. Try to keep some cash on hand. It will come in handy in the event that stores open and banks and ATM's are closed. 4. Stay away from rising water, as it is most likely contaminated and a good conductor for downed power-lines. 5. Books, board games, and other puzzles are a good investment to keep boredom and stress at bay.

Hurricane season is an ominous time for many people. The thought of personal loss and widespread destruction is never pleasant, but simple safety tips like those above can provide an easy solution to an otherwise deadly dilemma.
