One of the most important things to consider when trying to keep your house cool is using your air conditioning to its highest potential. To start, trying placing fans near your air conditioning units to help circulate air around the house. Even if the air isn't blowing directly on you, it will still help cool you and the rest of the house. Ceiling fans can also reduce indoor temperatures by a significant amount, and circulate air better than standing fans or window fans. Also, try to keep things that radiate heat away from your air conditioner's thermostat and this will cause the air conditioner to work harder. Another important thing to remember when trying to cool your home is to change your air filters, this can make a difference not only in the efficiency of your air conditioner but also in the quality of the air produced. Keep in mind that a new conditioner will work more effectively than an old one and is generally worth the investment, especially if your air conditioner is over five years old.
Landscaping around your house can also impact the temperature inside your home. Finding ways to shade your windows with trees and shrubbery can help immensely when you are on a tight budget. Also you can use trees to insulate your house and help keep cool air from escaping your house. Growing ivy on trellises can help shade the house as well, and can be an incredible help on a tight budget since the materials needed aren't expensive. Adding trees and bushes not only helps shade and cool your house, but adds value to your home. Make sure however that none of the trees you plant are blocking air flow to your air conditioner.
Many sources on how to help cool your home recommend costlier techniques such as using lighter roof tiles or installing weatherstripping. While this can help, there are much cheaper things that can keep your house cool. These little things can add up when trying to cool your house, and cost little - again assisting you on your tight budget. A few examples are: Air drying dishes instead of using the dishwasher, using energy saving lights and appliances, always doing a full load of laundry to save water, taking showers instead of baths, make sure your fireplace damper is closed tightly and take note of electronics that radiate heat and be sure to turn them off when you are not using them. Overall just being observant of your appliances and making sure regular maintenance is performed can help on a tight budget. In addition to regular maintenance of your household appliances, using light reflecting window shades can help eliminate more heat from your home, and doesn't cost much.
